The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using international channels.
This course covers both training and examination. The course also replaces the previous VHF Radio Operators Certificate and is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
The RYA Short Range Certificate course is now in line with other European countries as per the rules and regulations under CEPT (The European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations). Training has gone up to 10 hours with separate examination making the classroom based course longer in duration. We expect you to have completed 3 hours of home study using the VHF Radio Handbook G31 and 7 hours of classroom study commencing at 09:00 a.m.
